The @UmpScorecards data archive now hosts umpiring data going back to 2015, the first year Statcast was implemented at the MLB level.
New stats:
As of this season, the @UmpScorecards Twitter and data archive both rely on an updated, and significantly more advanced, measure of umpire consistency for each game. The new method – inspired by the work of Dr. David Hunter, professor of mathematics at Westmont College – uses kernel density estimation to approximate an umpire's established strike zone in a specific game. New graphics:
The new @UmpScorecards Twitter graphics now feature a more representative and organic established umpire zone. In short, this new zone represents the zone in which an umpire would be more likely to call a taken pitch a strike. To read more about how this zone is calculated, click here.
You may also notice some more general changes to the font, placement of components, and colors. These changes were made with readability and brand cohesiveness in mind.
New filters:
The @UmpScorecards data archive now allows users to explore umpiring data using custom and advanced filtering. For example, fans can find the best umpires in April, the best called game at Yankee Stadium, or which team has been favored the most in their home games.
